Josephine “JoAnn” Lewis began working at Indian River State College (IRSC) in 1989 in a support capacity for both the Adult High School and General Educational Development (GED) programs. She then moved into an adjunct faculty position in 2006, teaching developmental English for ten years while also tutoring English and reading as well as assisting students in the Writing Center. JoAnn is currently the English/Reading Team Leader for the Academic Support Center (ASC), Main Campus.
JoAnn graduated with a degree in English from the College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University in 2006 and published poetry in its literary magazine. She also published a young adult fiction novel, Kissing Frogs, in 2011. JoAnn received a Master’s Degree in English and Creative Writing from Southern New Hampshire University in 2018. JoAnn was nominated for IRSC’s Adjunct Faculty of the Year in 2016 and received the award for Adjunct Faculty of the Year in 2019. JoAnn remains active in her creative writing pursuits, working on a novel as well as a screenplay inspired by a true story set in World War II. SUBJECTS TUTORED: English Reading Writing |
Writing has been a consistent thread throughout Michelle Abaldo’s career. Born in New York City, she graduated Magna Cum Laude from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey with a Bachelor’s Degree in English and Education. As Public Relations Director for UA Columbia Cablevision, she helped launch new cable television systems such as MTV and ESPN.
Michelle joined IRCC in 1989 as Institutional Advancement Specialist and shared her love of writing as a College Prep instructor. Michelle also completed Master’s Degree coursework in educational leadership at Florida Atlantic University. She was appointed Director of Institutional Advancement with responsibility for public relations, media, and communications, taking a leadership role in the College’s branding as a state college in 2008. Michelle was presented with the President’s Cup in 2000 for guiding the 40th Anniversary Celebration. More recently, she was thrilled to receive the IRSC Ambassador Award in 2017, shortly before retirement. She is delighted to join the members of the ASC team and impressed with their sincere commitment to student success. Kelly is a newcomer to the ASC but has a long history with IRSC. She worked in adult education until 2006 and completed her Associate of Arts degree requirements as a student. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York, and her Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. Upon returning to Florida, she began teaching English at Fort Pierce Central High School. She also works in the ASC as an English and reading tutor as well as a writing advocate. Kelly published a young adult book in 2011 and is currently working on a short story collection.

Anne joined the ASC as a tutor in 2004, and both her daughters have graduated from IRSC. After her girls, her second love in life is writing. She has written several children’s books, a historical romance novel, and a money management book for young entrepreneurs. Currently, she is working on a book based on her vet tech daughter's adventures in a vet office with a wild assortment of animals. She hopes to get published one day.
Anne was a dance major in college but switched to English education and graduated from the University of Florida. She worked in a legal publishing firm for ten years in California. She loves working in the ASC Writing Center and helping students discover the joy, not the pain, of writing. She also works for the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program for the health department helping moms and babies get off to a good start. SUBJECTS TUTORED: English Reading Writing |
Christin earned her bachelor's degree in English and a master's degree in education, both from Florida Atlantic University. She also holds a graduate certificate in e-learning and online teaching. She is a passionate educator who loves to help others learn.
Christin joined Indian River State College in 2002 as an Academic Support Center Tutor. She added Curriculum Specialist to her duties, creating the Academic Support Writing Center. She then moved into a faculty position, teaching both developmental English and developmental reading for over ten years while acting as organizer and mentor to other preparatory instructors. Currently, Christin is back in the Writing Center helping students refine their writing skills. Christin enjoys reading, writing, spending time with family, and going to the beach. Bob graduated from The Ohio State University in 1969 and has been involved in education ever since. He taught in the Columbus City School System for thirty years. After retiring from teaching, he worked for Harcourt Publishing Company at a scoring center, where he trained people how to evaluate proficiency tests for elementary, middle, and high school students from various states. Since 2004 he has been at IRSC where he taught developmental English classes and currently tutors in the ASC lab.
When he's not working, Bob enjoys exercising, reading, watching sports, traveling, and socializing with his friends and family. The students, administration, and his co-workers all make IRSC an enjoyable work experience. Everyone is committed to helping all students achieve their educational goals. Noel has been working at IRSC since 2001. She teaches and tutors students in reading, writing, and English skills to assist them in achieving success in their college experience. She spent her early years of teaching in elementary schools, both in the public and private arena. She also served as the education coordinator for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Washington, D.C., and as a reading specialist for the Job Corps Center in North Dakota, Missouri, and Maryland.
Noel has a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education and teaching from Mount Marty College and a Master of Education degree in education/reading from Towson University. Noel's skills include: program coordinator, group training coach, motivational speaker, teamwork facilitator, professional trainer, consultant, and tutor. Mary Jo has worked at the ASC since 2010 as an English and reading tutor. She graduated from State University of New York at Stony Brook with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and art. She is originally from Long Island, New York, but has resided in Vero Beach for over twenty years. She has taught preschool, elementary, middle school, high school, and college prep students. She enjoys teaching and helping students become successful in their academic goals.
When Mary Jo is not teaching, she enjoys spending time with her husband, her three children, her two grandchildren, and her friends. Her hobbies include the arts, especially drawing and painting.
