Research Paper >  Developing the Topic

Developing a Topic

Every good research paper begins with a strong topic. The following steps can help student-writers get started.

  1. Start early.
Begin thinking about the assignment as soon as you know about it. Study your course syllabus, be aware of due dates, and plan accordingly. An acceptable research paper requires time and effort.
  2. Follow the assignment.
Know the instructor’s exact requirements, including topic, citation style, and format.
  3. Brainstorm.
Write down your ideas concerning possible topics. If the instructor has assigned a specific topic, write down any ideas you have concerning the topic.
  4. Verify your subject.
Talk to your instructor as soon as possible to ensure that your topic is acceptable.
  5. Conduct preliminary research.
Make certain that there is enough relevant information available to help you develop your topic. Consult a librarian or Academic Support Center instructor for guidance.

If you need guidance in developing a topic, consult with your instructor or visit one of Indian River State College’s Academic Support Centers.
