Virtual Pre-Admission Exam Review

All applicants to the IRSC Nursing Program should visit the Nursing Department application website, (click here). The RN and PN nursing programs will be using the HESI A2 as a pre-entrance exam. The exam will be administered virtually by ProctorU. The IRSC HESI A2 Testing page contains all of the testing details for students. What subjects are on the HESI A2?
Here is some general information on topics included in each section of the HESI A2.
The HESI A2 five (5) subject-areas:
1. Basic Math Skills: 55-item exam. Focuses on math skills needed for health care fields, including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, and general math facts.
2. Reading Comprehension: 55-item exam. Provides reading scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, and making logical inferences.
3. Anatomy & Physiology: 30-item exam. Provides coverage of general terminology and anatomical structures and systems.
4. Biology: 30-item exam. Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis.
5. Vocabulary and General Knowledge: 55-item exam. Contains vocabulary terms that are commonly used in both general English-speaking settings and in health care fields.

How can the ASC help?
ASC HESI A2 REVIEW SESSIONS
During the Spring 2023 semester, live, in-person HESI A2 review sessions will be offered for prospective nursing program applicants who plan to apply by the May 2023 deadline. These services and resources are offered free of charge and will take place in H-120 at Massey Campus.
MOMETRIX HESI RESOURCES
Members of the local community and IRSC students have access to some wonderful Mometrix HESI A2 test preparation materials free of charge through the St. Lucie County Library system. You can access these resources, including practice HESI exams, test questions, and study cards by following the procedure below:

Go to the Library database list (through Okta or https://irsc.libguides.com/az.php then to “Test Prep” – look for the first one in the yellow “Best Bets” box.

- Follow the prompts, then enter your St. Lucie County library ID to log in.
- Contact IRSC Library Services at 772-462-7600 for assistance in applying for a St. Lucie County Library Card.
- Once logged in, select the “Nursing” topic from the Mometrix homepage.
- Select "HESI A2" to access HESI practice exams and study materials.

- Students will have to create a free account with Peterson’s to get started (in addition to authenticating like normal into the databases).
- Once logged into Peterson’s, do a keyword search for HESI and follow the link to the practice tests.

3. HESI A2 (Previously NLN) Science Practice Tests
Our practice tests will have a fair amount of info you will not be tested on. If you can sort out the questions relevant to the HESI A2, try them. All tests are appropriate for RN and PN applicants to assess knowledge. Verbal section contains questions in the review material. Math section contains a math assessment test.

Additional Resources
It is very beneficial to have the NLN RN/PN Review Guide for Pre-Entrance Exam book which is available online as an additional resource. The 3rd edition is the last edition the NLN will produce. This book has multiple practice exams with excellent explanations of the answers. Sources for obtaining this book include: amazon.com, ebay.com, walmart.com, vitalsource.com. (See images below).
